WHAT TO EXPECT

The first thing we want you to know is: You’re with friends, so relax.

Whether you're a seasoned church veteran or have never been in church before, you don't have to worry about being identified as a “visitor” or being “volunteered” to do something you don’t feel comfortable doing.

What you will find is:

Each Service is around 75 – 90 minutes.

A warm, uplifting atmosphere.

Friendly greeters and ushers who’ll help you find your way around.

Guests are encouraged to enjoy the visit with NO obligation to give.

Music and messages relevant to your daily life.

Your kids are safe and they will have fun. Our Tiny Town and KidzWorld teams are well trained caring volunteers who desire to help you guide your child to a life-long relationship with God.

Hang out after service for coffee and bagels.

what's happening

    • Small Groups

Sunday mornings at Gateway are a great way to establish and deepen your relationship with God through large group experiences.

Small Groups take the Sunday morning experience into a smaller setting where people can grapple with real-life issues and discuss how our lives interweave with God and His Word.

This involves a lot of fun, laughter, much talking & snacking, as well as prayer, Bible study, discussion, counsel and encouragement.

These groups also provide opportunity to care for one another’s practical needs such as meals for a family with a newborn, or networking to help an individual locate a job or new accommodation. See Connection Central for details in the foyer

    • STUDENTS
Junior High and High School meet on Fridays from 7:00pm – 9:00pm.
Club 56 (for 5th and 6th graders) meet on Sunday’s during the 9am service in the Academy Chapel.

OUR STORY SO FAR

960x500

In 1965, sixteen dedicated people joined Rev. Dr. Daniel Mercaldo and his wife Evangeline to establish an Interdenominational Bible Church in growing Staten Island, New York. The progress of these past 50 years is a testimony to the timeless truth, “Little is much when God is in it.”

In those early years, Church at the Gateway, known then as Calvary Temple, temporarily worshipped in homes, a legion post, the basement of a bank, and a rented church building. In 1967, we purchased our first 1.2-acre site in the community of Oakwood. After nine years of planning, working, and praying, we finally had our first church home in 1974. After going through a major church-growth study, our name was changed to Gateway Cathedral. Within just a few years, we realized that the 200-seat Church Center was too small for our rapidly growing church family.

In 1978, we completed building a larger Worship Center seating about 400, which helped us continue to grow. When it seemed we had bought up all the available houses and land around the Oakwood church site, we decided to relocate. With God’s help, in 1989 we were able to purchase our present 17-acre site in Richmond Valley at a NYC auction. In 1993 we moved into our Family Life Center, with seating capacity of 700. In 2003, we completed an educational building for our Academy and Children’s Ministry, and are presently constructing a Chapel seating 300, and Atrium space for fellowship gatherings. Our master plan calls for the future construction of a 1,500 Worship Center.

These facilities are just an outward symbol of a growing church family that is sharing hope in Christ to our Region. From that small beginning to a church family of many hundreds, our mission of “Connecting people to God and others,” continues to motivate our vision into the future.

FAQ

  • WHERE AND WHEN DOES GATEWAY MEET?

There are two worship service options on Sundays on the Church at the Gateway campus, one at 9am and one at 11:15 a.m. Both take place in the main auditorium. You’ll see the auditorium entrance as soon as you enter the building, and a friendly volunteer will help you find a seat and answer any questions you may have. Try them both to see which service fits you. We serve coffee and bagels after both services.

  • WHY DO CHURCHES HAVE A TIME OF MUSIC AND SINGING?

From the beginning, music has been a way for people to connect with their Creator. At Gateway, we enter into God’s presence with OPEN hearts and minds as we seek to experience Him in a meaningful and authentic way. We welcome you to listen and enjoy, or sing along as you feel comfortable.

  • HOW DO I KNOW MY CHILD IS SAFE?

We understand that leaving your child with strangers can be unsettling. However, our Tiny Town and KidzWorld Teams are staffed with caring volunteers who have been background screened and reference checked. Parents are welcome to observe our programs and receive a tour of our beautiful children's facilities accompanied by a trained staff member.

  • WHAT MAKES CHURCH AT THE GATEWAY UNIQUE?

We believe that God has called us to be the church within the world. We cannot stay within a building and consider ourselves to be a full picture of the church. Our ministry, our church is designed to be a unique institution that exists within our community for our community. Jesus painted a picture of the Kingdom of God that reached the alone, the outcast and the poor; we recognize that it is our responsibility to care for the world. Because we love God, we love the people around us.

  • WHAT ARE GATEWAY’S DENOMINATIONAL CONNECTIONS?

Church at the Gateway is an interdenominational Bible church where we believe that the Bible is the only inspired, infallible, authoritative Word of God. We believe in the spiritual unity of all believers. Regardless of denominational background, we welcome all who desire to know and serve Christ to be part of our growing church family. Our expression of this belief is our membership in the National Association of Evangelicals (NAE). NAE represents more than 15 million evangelical, Bible-believing, born-again Christians in over 50,000 local churches, 70 denominations, and more than 100 church ministry organizations throughout America.
